Description
This stunning artwork was created from a wide mix of materials. The flight feathers are hand-carved wood. The wing feathers are brass with a custom patina added for color (not painted). The body is copper with an ammonia-fumed patina to create a beautiful blue color. The tail feathers are stainless with a brushed brass finish. The long train feathers (over 160) are built from a stainless steel rod with thousands of pieces of copper wire individually soldered on (and then patina’d) and the ‘eye’ on the end of each one is a cloisonné (glass enamel) on copper.
The base holds the support made from scrap iron and an old propane heater tube. It is sheeted in stainless steel and has over 500 hand-formed copper and brass leaves attached. Added to the ground is copper grass with small periwinkle blue enamel flowers. The front of the base has a museum-style plaque describing the bird. Two copper handles are used to raise and lower the retractable wheels.
